Color theory and the Making of Monotone

by Patrick Havens

Noel Jackson looks young but he speaks with authority.

Background: “Uber geek” Worked on Internet for 12 Years.  Worked post production for a magazine.

He disliked how the internet went from a very personal place to a lot of the same, so wanted to change it.

Monotone was a happy accident.

What is color? and What makes a Good Color?

What is Color?

Goes through a bunch of slides explaining colors and how colors are made.

Explanation of Color Profiles

  • Physical Monitor
  • Color Profile (OS Level)
  • App Level
  • Image Level

Example of how colors can shift.

Building Monotone
Locating a good color and manipulating it.

The Rule of Thirds – the Best Spots to reference the color in a picture.

He used php to get the colors from the points on the photo.

Converted the points to HSV values.

Looped through the colors, put them in an array.

Narrow it down to one base color

It looked for the found the brightest and most saurated color and if the same then used that.  if not did some math and double checked.

Monochromatic is the new pink.   He used the CSS_Color php class to create a whole color scheme out of a base color.

functions.php is like a theme specific plugins

He used hooks, filters and actions to take the values and save thevalues in the posts metadata.

What can I do with all this?

He wants us to do much more with our themes.  Even if no more then changing small things, to bring “Art Direction” back into our theme/blog design.

What about Monotone and feaure x?

They wanted this and that, and he wrote them down. The feature requests where good, but he could do more.

“You can automate a good experience with a theme.”

Preview of Duotone his version 2 of Monotone.  Ability too select a background color. Can be post specific.  EXIF Data.  Widgets.

And the quick session is over.
